How to make flashcards that actually work (with examples)

To make a good flashcard, put one specific question on the front and one short answer on the back, in your own words. Then study the deck by trying to answer out loud before you flip. Bad flashcards often fail on the first step: they hold a topic and a paragraph instead of a question and an answer.

How to make flashcards: the rules of a good card

These rules draw on Piotr Wozniak's 20 rules of formulating knowledge and on university learning centers. Together they decide whether your deck helps or wastes your evening.

1. One fact per card

Wozniak calls this the minimum information principle: formulate the material in as simple a way as possible. The University of Toronto Scarborough's learning strategies page says it plainly: "Less information per card is better".

Quick test: if you could get half the answer right, the card is too big.

2. Ask a question, not a topic

A topic on the front ("The Krebs cycle") lets you nod along without recalling anything. A question asks for a specific answer, and producing an answer is the point. This is retrieval practice, covered in our active recall guide.

3. Use your own words

Copying a textbook sentence onto a card feels productive, but it can skip the thinking. Rewrite the idea the way you'd explain it to a friend. Wozniak also says to personalize and give examples, because personalized examples are very resistant to interference from similar facts.

Also follow his first rule: do not memorize what you do not understand. If you can't explain it, reread first, then make the card. In Studycamp's PDF reader you can highlight the passage and annotate it before you turn it into a question.

4. Use cloze deletion for definitions and formulas

A cloze card hides one part of a sentence: "The inner mitochondrial membrane holds the enzyme [...]." Wozniak calls cloze deletion a quick and effective way to turn textbook knowledge into cards.

Keep one blank per card.

5. Add an image when the subject is visual

For anatomy, maps, diagrams, or chemical structures, a picture can do what a description can't. Wozniak's rule on imagery describes graphic deletion: hide part of the image, the way you'd hide a word in a cloze card.

6. Avoid sets and long lists

Wozniak says it is nearly impossible to memorize sets of more than five members without mnemonic techniques. For ordered lists, his fix is overlapping cloze cards. So instead of one card for "the seven steps," make cards like "After step 3, what comes next?"

7. Make some cards about ideas, not only details

Detail cards cover definitions and facts. A 2018 study by Lin, McDaniel and Miyatsu tested detailed versus conceptual flashcards, which link ideas by comparing, contrasting, or tracing a process. Conceptual cards gave better short-answer test performance for learners low in structure-building ability (people who find it harder to organize new material on their own), but not for those high in it (Journal of Applied Research in Memory and Cognition). In the related Learning Scientists summary, students who got no instructions were more likely to write detail cards.

Our suggestion: after you make a few detail cards, add one that connects them. "How does X differ from Y?" or "Why does A cause B?"

Three before and after examples

Weak cards often look like notes. Good cards look like exam questions.

Example 1: Biology

Before

  • Front: Mitochondria
  • Back: Powerhouse of the cell. Double membrane. Cristae. Matrix. Makes ATP. Has its own DNA. Involved in apoptosis.

This card is a topic and seven facts. You'll recall three of them and feel fine.

After

  • Front: Which mitochondrial membrane holds ATP synthase?

  • Back: The inner membrane (folded into cristae).

  • Front: The folds of the inner mitochondrial membrane are called [...].

  • Back: cristae

Two cards, one fact each. The rest of the "before" card can become more cards the same way.

Example 2: History

Before

  • Front: Causes of the French Revolution
  • Back: Debt, bread prices, Enlightenment ideas, unfair taxes, weak king, estates system.

A list of causes has no natural order, and you can't tell which items you actually know.

After

  • Front: Why did voting stall at the Estates-General in 1789?

  • Back: Voting by order gave each estate one vote, so the clergy and nobility could outvote the Third Estate two to one if they sided together. The Third Estate wanted a vote by head, since it had about as many deputies as the other two estates combined.

  • Front: What problem was the Estates-General of 1789 called to help solve?

  • Back: The crown's financial crisis. France was deep in debt, and Louis XVI needed new taxes that only the Estates-General was said to be able to approve.

Now each card tests one cause-and-effect link.

Example 3: Statistics

Before

  • Front: p-value
  • Back: The probability of getting results at least as extreme as observed, assuming the null hypothesis is true, in a hypothesis test with a significance level set beforehand.

Accurate, but you can recite it without understanding it.

After

  • Front: You get p = 0.03. In one sentence, what does that mean?

  • Back: If the null hypothesis were true, data this extreme or more would show up about 3% of the time.

  • Front: Why can a very small p-value still mean a boring result?

  • Back: With a big sample, tiny effects get tiny p-values. Check the effect size, not only p.

The second card is a conceptual card in the sense of the Lin study above. It links two ideas instead of repeating one.

Hold generated cards to the same test. If you make a deck in Studycamp and a card looks like one of the "before" examples, split it or replace it.

Paper or app?

Both can work, as long as you retrieve answers from memory. The differences are mostly practical.

Our rule of thumb: forty cards and two weeks, paper is fine. Five hundred terms, an app saves effort.

One honest note on "make your own." Anki's manual says that creating your own deck is the most effective way to learn a complex subject. Learning-science summaries of the Lin study say student-made cards did not produce better learning than provided ones, and took more time (Learning and the Brain, The Learning Scientists). Making cards is worth it only if you spend the time thinking about the material rather than copying it.

What is the best flashcard app?

It depends on what you need. The descriptions below come from each product's own site (as of September 2026).

  • Brainscape: Web and mobile. It uses confidence-based repetition: you rate each card from 1 to 5. Its site says creating and importing unlimited flashcards is free, with paid options for extras such as advanced AI card creation.
  • Quizlet: Widely used for public sets. If you use someone else's set, check the cards before you trust them. We compare it with other options in our Quizlet alternatives post.

Whichever you pick, you still have to answer from memory and come back to the deck.

How many flashcards should you make a day?

We found no research-backed magic number. The useful limit is the number of reviews you can finish, not the number of cards you can write.

Anki's manual gives a concrete sense of the load: learning 20 new cards a day consistently means roughly 200 reviews a day. It also warns that more than one user has studied hundreds of new cards in the first few days and then become overwhelmed by the reviews.

A simple starting point (our suggestion, not a study result):

  • Start with 10 to 20 new cards a day.
  • Do reviews first, then add new cards.
  • If reviews take more than about 30 to 40 minutes, cut back on new cards.
  • On paper, the Toronto page suggests reviewing a small amount of cards at one time, 5 to 10.

How to study with flashcards

It's easy to cheat at flashcards without noticing.

Answer before you flip

Say the answer out loud, or write it down, before you turn the card. Toronto's advice is to read each card aloud and guess before checking. The Anki manual says that if you can't answer within about 10 seconds, it's probably better to show the answer than keep struggling.

Flipping and thinking "yeah, I knew that" is recognition, not recall. The two can feel alike, but only recall is the retrieval practice described above.

Shuffle the deck

If you always see cards in the same order, you learn the order. Toronto's guidance is to randomize your deck to practice recalling different topics. Also study cards in both directions when it makes sense: term to definition, then definition to term. Studycamp's flashcards have shuffle built in.

Use two piles

Make a "got it" pile and a "not yet" pile. After a pass, go through the "not yet" pile again, and spend more time there. Toronto says to spend more time on the cards you don't know well.

Don't drop a card after one correct answer

Getting a card right once doesn't guarantee it's learned. In a 2008 experiment in Science, Karpicke and Roediger had students learn foreign-language vocabulary. After a correct answer, some items were dropped from testing, some from further study, and some from both. Repeated studying after learning had no effect on delayed recall, but repeated testing produced a large positive effect. The same paper reports that students' predictions of their own performance were uncorrelated with actual performance. So your feeling that a card is "done" may not be reliable.

So keep correct cards in rotation. Move them to a slower pile, not the bin.

Spread it out, and mix old with new

A 2009 study by Nate Kornell found that studying one large stack of flashcards was more effective than studying four smaller stacks separately, and that spacing beat cramming on the last day (Applied Cognitive Psychology). Small stacks shorten the gap before each card comes back, which is the spacing that helped. Our reading: keep one growing deck per course instead of a separate stack per chapter, and mix old cards in with new ones.
