Pick an AI study tool by the job you need done: ask questions, drill yourself, shrink a reading, or take notes. Then check its answers against your own material. The five kinds of AI study tools

Most "best AI study tools" lists mix these together, which makes them hard to use. A PDF-to-flashcards tool has little in common with a chatbot that helps you outline an essay. Here's the split.

1. Chat with your own files

You upload lecture slides, a textbook chapter, or your notes. You ask questions. The tool answers using only those files, ideally with a link back to the passage.

This is the group with the most upside for studying, because it fixes the biggest problem with chatbots: you can't tell if the answer is right. When the answer points to page 14 of your slides, you can look.

Its weak spot is coverage. If the answer isn't in your files, a good tool says so. A bad one guesses. Ask something you know is missing and see what happens.

2. Flashcards and quizzes

These tools read your material and generate cards or multiple-choice questions. The good part is speed. Making cards by hand can take longer than studying them.

The bad part is quality. AI cards can be too easy (pulling bolded terms), too broad, or built from a sentence that only makes sense in context. Our suggestion: skim the deck once and delete or rewrite the weak cards. 3. Summaries and PDF summarizers

An AI PDF summarizer reads a long document and gives you the main points. It's the fastest way to decide whether a 40-page reading is worth your Thursday night.

It's also easy to misuse. A summary shows you the shape of a topic. It doesn't put anything in your memory. More on that further down.

4. Note-taking tools

These record or transcribe a lecture, then clean it into notes. They help most when you can't write fast enough. They help least when you never look at the notes again.

5. General chatbots

ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and similar tools know a little about everything and are good at explaining. They're the right choice for "explain this like I'm new to it" or "give me three practice problems on this topic." They're the wrong choice for "what does my professor's slide 12 say," because they haven't seen it.

A few notes on that table.

ChatGPT wasn't built around your course files, but study mode suggests OpenAI sees the "just give me the answer" habit as a problem. At launch it was available on the Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans (Campus Technology).

Using ChatGPT for studying without fooling yourself

ChatGPT for studying tends to work best as a tutor that quizzes you, not an oracle. Here are prompts we'd suggest (our suggestions, not tested results).

Start by pasting your material in and telling it to stay there. Try: "Use only the text below. If the answer isn't in it, say 'not in the text.' Then ask me five questions about it, one at a time, and wait for my answer."

Next, make it grade you. Try: "Here's my explanation of osmosis. Point out anything wrong or missing, but don't rewrite it for me." That turns a chatbot into a checker, and it keeps the thinking on your side.

If you get stuck, switch on study mode. Its questions feel slow, and that friction is deliberate: the tool is trying not to hand you the answer.

Avoid asking it for facts, dates, statistics, or sources from memory. That's where it can make things up.

Chatbots can sound sure and be wrong

Chatbots don't reliably flag their own mistakes. They write fluent text either way.

The clearest evidence is about citations. A study in JMIR Mental Health (November 2025) asked GPT-4o for citations on mental health topics and found 35 of 176 (19.9%) were fabricated. The rate depended on the topic: 6% for major depressive disorder, a widely covered condition, but 28% and 29% for two less-covered ones (JMIR Mental Health). Lesser-known topics were the risky ones.

That's one model and one field, not a law of nature. But the less common your topic, the less you should trust an answer from memory.

Our suggestion: ask for the source, then open it. If a tool cites a passage in your file, read the passage. If it cites a paper, find the paper. And before you trust a new tool, ask it something you already know from your own notes. If it gets that wrong, stop.

That's the reasoning behind our rule of thumb. Files give you a place to check. Memory gives you nothing to check against.

Summaries feel like studying

This problem is quieter than a wrong answer.

A summary, a clean set of notes, or a tidy AI explanation gives you the feeling of understanding. But you haven't been asked to remember anything. A large review of study techniques (Dunlosky et al., 2013) found that practice testing is among the most useful techniques, while rereading and highlighting are much less efficient. A summary is closer to rereading than to testing.

There's now direct evidence for AI. In a randomized field experiment at a Turkish high school (2,848 student-level observations from nearly 1,000 students), published in PNAS in 2025, students using a standard GPT-4 tutor solved 48% more practice problems correctly than the control group. Once the AI was taken away, they scored 17% lower on the exam. A version built to give hints instead of answers largely avoided that drop (Bastani et al., PNAS). It was math and high school, so treat it as a warning, not a forecast for your organic chemistry class.

Our rule of thumb: AI can read for you, but it can't remember for you. Use the time you save to test yourself. Here's one routine to try with a summary. Ask for a summary of Chapter 6, then close it. Write down everything you remember for five minutes. Open the summary and check what you missed, then ask the AI for five quiz questions on the gaps. Your school's AI rules

Students are using AI heavily. A 2025 survey of 1,041 UK undergraduates by HEPI found 92% used some AI tool, up from 66% the year before (HEPI Student Generative AI Survey 2025). It's UK data, but you won't be the only one in your lecture hall using it.

Rules vary by school and by course. Cornell's teaching center describes three common positions: ban it, allow it with attribution, or encourage it with attribution. Its sample syllabus language says to ask the instructor first if you're unsure, and that students should expect to verbally explain the work they submit (Cornell Center for Teaching Innovation).

Read the AI line in each syllabus at the start of term. Quizzing yourself with AI is different from using it on a graded essay, and many policies treat them differently, though not all do. If a policy is unclear, ask by email and keep the reply.

How to pick: a five-minute test

Before you commit to any tool, our suggestion is to run this:

  1. Upload a real file. Use a lecture PDF from this week, not the demo.
  2. Ask something that's in it. Does the answer match, and can you find the source?
  3. Ask something that isn't in it. Does it say so, or does it make something up?
  4. Generate ten flashcards or questions. How many would you keep?
