Cornell notes: how they work, with a worked example

Cornell notes are a page layout: a wide notes column on the right, a narrow cue column on the left, and a summary strip at the bottom. You take notes in the wide column during class, write questions in the cue column afterward, and then use those questions to quiz yourself. The layout is only half the method. The quizzing is the half the research supports, though that research covers practice testing in general, not Cornell notes specifically.

What Cornell notes are
Cornell notes are a note-taking system that splits a page into three zones so your notes turn into study material without a rewrite. You record in one zone and distill in another. The third holds a summary.
The three zones:
- Notes column (right, wide). What you write during the lecture or while reading.
- Cue column (left, narrow). Questions and keywords you add afterward, based on the notes.
- Summary (bottom). Two or three sentences in your own words covering the whole page.

Where Cornell notes came from
Walter Pauk, an education professor at Cornell University, developed the system. Cornell's own Learning Strategies Center credits him and points to his book How to Study in College.
According to Cornell's alumni magazine, Pauk (PhD '55) created the system in the 1950s while working as a teaching assistant. It reached a national audience through the first edition of How to Study in College in 1962. Pauk later served as the university's reading and study skills center director, retired in 1978, and died at 105.
One detail from that article is useful. Pauk said to keep the cue column empty while you take notes, and to draw questions from your notes when you review and recite them. So the cue column was never meant to be filled in live. It is a review tool.
The exact page layout
On a standard 8.5 by 11 inch page, the common setup is:
- Cue column: a vertical line about 2.5 inches from the left edge.
- Notes column: the remaining 6 inches or so on the right.
- Summary area: a horizontal line about 2 inches from the bottom.
Those numbers come from a community college guide, which gives all three. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga gives the same 2.5 inch and 6 inch split. Other schools differ slightly. James Madison University's Learning Toolbox, for example, says the vertical line goes about 2 inches from the left and the horizontal line about 5 or 6 lines from the bottom. Don't fuss over it. What matters is the proportion: a notes column more than twice as wide as the cue column, and enough room at the bottom to write a real summary.
How to take Cornell notes, step by step
Cornell's own materials describe five steps, often called the five Rs. The wording varies by school. The Cornell Learning Strategies Center overview uses "Record, Questions, Recite, Reflect, Review," while many university handouts use "Reduce" for the second step. The idea is the same.
- Record. During class, write in the notes column only. Use short phrases and abbreviations, in your own words. Our suggestion: leave a blank line between ideas so you can add to them later.
- Reduce (or write questions). Fill the cue column soon after class. Turn each chunk of notes into a question or a keyword that would make you recall it. The Cornell overview says to do this "as soon after class as possible."
- Recite. Cover the notes column with a sheet of paper. Look at one cue at a time and answer it out loud, in your own words. Then uncover the notes and check.
- Reflect. Ask how the material connects to other topics, to earlier lectures, or to a problem you'll need to solve.
- Review. Cornell's guidance is to spend at least ten minutes every week going back over your earlier notes. A short weekly pass is likely a better use of time than one long cram, since the Dunlosky review below also rates spaced practice as high utility.
Our suggestion for the summary strip: write it between steps 2 and 3, after the cues, when you can see the whole page. If you can't summarize the page in two sentences, that may point to something you didn't understand.
A Cornell notes example
This is an illustrative page for a first-year biology lecture on cellular respiration, simplified to fit. The notes column is what you'd write in class. The cue column is what you'd add that evening.

Summary (bottom of the page): Cellular respiration turns glucose into ATP in stages. Glycolysis happens in the cytoplasm, outside the mitochondria. Pyruvate is then converted to acetyl-CoA, which feeds the Krebs cycle inside the mitochondria. The electron transport chain makes most of the ATP but needs oxygen.
Notice what the cues look like. They're real questions with a specific answer, and each one maps to a chunk you can cover. A cue like "glycolysis" would let you nod at the page without retrieving anything. "Where does glycolysis happen, and what does it produce?" forces you to.
How to review with the cue column
Cornell's steps stop at "recite," so this routine is our suggestion. Cover the notes column. Read the first cue. Say the answer out loud before you look. Uncover the notes and mark the cue with a dot if you missed it or fumbled it. Move to the next one.
When you reach the bottom, go back through only the dotted cues. Then cover the summary and try to say it from memory. On a screen, the same routine works with the Cornell template in Studycamp: look at one cue, answer aloud, then check the note.
This is the case for using the method. Testing yourself is among the best-supported habits in the learning research. A large review by Dunlosky and colleagues (2013) in Psychological Science in the Public Interest rated practice testing as high utility, because it helped students of many ages and ability levels. The same review rated underlining and rereading as low utility. Rereading a page of notes is the default way students "review," and the research rates it poorly.
Be careful with what that finding says. It rates practice testing in general, not Cornell notes. This is an inference: the cue column gives you ready-made test questions, so the layout makes testing easier to do. The layout doesn't test you. You have to cover the page. Does the Cornell method actually work?
The evidence is mixed.
A 2026 study in Frontiers in Psychology randomly assigned 134 second-year pre-service teachers at a Turkish university to four note-taking conditions. Cornell was one, with 32 students. The intervention ran five weeks, and the outcome was a multiple-choice test. On a retention test four weeks later, only the Cornell group scored significantly higher than the sentence-style control. After correction, the immediate post-test showed no significant pairwise differences between methods. The authors also flag limits: a purposively chosen sample, no power analysis, a short intervention, and one retention measurement.
An older high school Family and Consumer Sciences study taught students Cornell notes and compared unit test results with students who chose their own note-taking style. The authors concluded there was no difference in student performance.
What to do with that? The layout alone hasn't been shown to beat what students would do anyway. Because practice testing is well supported in general, the review step is the part the research supports most, though no Cornell-specific study here isolated it. If you write tidy Cornell notes and never cover the column, you may have mostly bought a nicer-looking page.
When Cornell notes fail
These are situations where the method may let you down. They are our inferences from how the method is built, not findings from a specific study.
- Fast, unstructured lectures. If the lecturer jumps around, you'll spend the class writing a stream of text with no natural chunks. Cues written later are harder to attach to anything. - Math, chemistry, and diagram-heavy subjects. Worked problems and drawings don't shrink into a two-line answer. A split page may serve you better (our suggestion): worked steps on the right, the reasoning and a cue like "Steps to solve a limiting reagent problem?" on the left. - Cues that are just headings. "Mitosis" as a cue tests nothing. Write the question.
- Never reviewing. This is probably the biggest one. The cue column is a to-do list for your future self. If future you never shows up, the page may have little advantage over a plain outline.
- Rewriting everything neatly. Some students copy their class notes into a fresh Cornell page for the look of it. That's rereading with extra steps. Add cues to the notes you already have.
