Active recall: what it is and 6 ways to use it

Active recall means trying to pull information out of your memory instead of looking at it again. You close the notes, ask yourself a question, and answer it before you check. Psychologists call the same thing retrieval practice, and it is one of the best-supported ways to study.

What active recall is

Active recall is any study activity where you produce an answer from memory before you see the correct one. A flashcard is the classic case. So is writing down everything you remember about a topic on a blank page.

Three names cover roughly the same idea:

  • Active recall is the student-facing term. It describes what you do: recall actively, don't just read passively.
  • Retrieval practice is the research term. It is the act of retrieving something from memory, and it's what researchers test in lab and classroom studies.
  • The blurting method is one specific way to do it. You read a section, hide it, and write everything you remember. More on that below.

The key part is the order. Try first, check second. If you look at the answer before you try, it's rereading with extra steps.

Why active recall beats rereading

Retrieving something from memory usually strengthens it more than seeing it again does. Many experiments back this up, including studies in real classrooms.

The classic experiment

In 2006, Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke ran a now-famous test. Undergraduates studied short science passages (about the sun and about sea otters). Some students studied a passage in four 5-minute study periods. Others studied it in one period and then took three free-recall tests, writing down what they remembered, with no feedback.

Five minutes later, the rereaders did better: 83% of the idea units versus 71% for the group that practiced recall. A week later it flipped. The recall group remembered 61% and the rereading group 40%. The students counted how often they read the whole passage. Across their study time, the recall group read it 3.4 times on average and the rereaders 14.2 times (Roediger and Karpicke, 2006).

Rereading won if the test came five minutes later. It lost once a week had passed. The rereaders were also more confident they'd remember the material, and they were wrong. Repeated reading feels like learning, and that feeling can mislead you.

It works for understanding, not only facts

A fair objection: recall might only help you memorize word lists. In 2011, Karpicke and Janell Blunt tested that with science texts. One group studied then practiced recall. Another built concept maps while looking at the text. A week later, on a mix of factual and inference questions, recall scored 0.67 versus 0.45 for concept mapping, about a 50% improvement. The advantage held for inference questions too (Karpicke and Blunt, 2011).

In a second experiment, 101 of 120 students (84%) did better after retrieval practice than after concept mapping. Before the test, 90 of the same 120 (75%) had predicted concept mapping would be just as good or better. Most of these students did not expect recall to win.

That gap shows up in real study habits. In a 2009 survey of 177 undergraduates at Washington University in St. Louis, 84% listed rereading among their study strategies and 55% ranked it first. Only 11% said they practiced retrieval (Karpicke, Butler and Roediger, 2009).

The bigger picture

One study is one study. Reviews across many studies point the same way:

  • Dunlosky and colleagues reviewed ten popular study techniques in 2013. They rated practice testing as high utility and rereading, highlighting, and summarization as low utility (Dunlosky et al., 2013).
  • A 2021 meta-analysis pooled 222 classroom studies with 48,478 students. Quizzing raised achievement by a medium amount (g = 0.499) (Yang et al., 2021).
  • A 2021 review of 50 classroom experiments found that 57% of the effect sizes showed medium or large benefits from retrieval practice, across different ages and subjects (Agarwal, Nunes and Blunt, 2021).
  • A 2017 meta-analysis concluded practice tests are more beneficial than restudying and all other comparison conditions it examined (Adesope, Trevisan and Sundararajan, 2017).

Effect sizes vary from study to study, and they are averages, so your own results may differ.

6 active recall methods

1. Flashcards

Flashcards are the most familiar form. One prompt on the front, one answer on the back, and you answer aloud or on paper before flipping.

Good cards ask one thing. Compare these:

  • Weak: "Photosynthesis" on the front, a paragraph on the back.
  • Better: "Where in the cell do the light-dependent reactions happen?" on the front, "Thylakoid membranes of the chloroplast" on the back.

A 2024 systematic review of active recall strategies in higher education found flashcards were popular and correlated with higher GPA and test scores (Xu et al., 2024). Correlated is the key word there. Students who use flashcards may also just study more.

2. Blurting

Blurting is a low-tech method that shows you your gaps quickly. Read a section, hide it, and write down everything you remember on a blank page. Then open your notes and mark what you missed in red.

Birmingham City University's guide describes it as a form of active recall and recommends short bursts with breaks, because it is intense. It also suggests blurting works best in the later stages of revision, once you've already absorbed the basics, and pairs well with flashcards or past papers (BCU).

3. Practice questions

Take questions from the end of textbook chapters, from your lecturer's problem sets, or write your own from your notes. Answer without the source open. Then mark yourself against the answer key.

Writing your own questions counts as studying too, since you have to decide what matters. Mix "what is" questions, "why" questions, and a few that combine two ideas ("How does X limit Y?").

4. Closed-book summaries

Close the book and write a one-page summary of the lecture or chapter from memory. Then compare. Studycamp's AI summary lists key points and terms from your file, which gives you a checklist to compare against.

Dunlosky's team rated summarization as low utility. That result is for summarizing generally, and a summary written with the text in front of you is mostly copying with new words. Writing it from memory is a different act, because you're retrieving. That reasoning is our suggestion, not a tested result, so treat it as a reasonable bet and not a guarantee.

5. Teach-back

Explain the topic out loud as if to a friend who missed the lecture. No notes. Where you stall, hand-wave, or say "it's kind of like...", you've found a gap.

6. Past papers

Sit an old exam under real conditions: timer on, no notes, no phone. Past papers combine recall with the skill you actually need on the day, which is answering in the format your exam uses.

Birmingham City University lists practice questions and past papers among its active recall methods (BCU). We suggest saving them for later in your prep, since each paper works once. Spend at least as long marking it as sitting it.

A worked blurting example

The topic is cellular respiration. The example is illustrative, not a study result.

Step 1: Read for 10 minutes. You read your notes on how cells turn glucose into ATP.

Step 2: Hide the notes. Set a 5-minute timer and write. A realistic first attempt looks like this:

Glycolysis happens in the cytoplasm. Glucose gets split into two pyruvate. Small net ATP gain, and NADH. Pyruvate goes into the mitochondria. Krebs cycle in the cytoplasm makes ATP, CO2 and NADH. Electron transport chain makes most of the ATP. Needs oxygen.

Step 3: Open the notes and mark it up. Check against the source, and write corrections in red:

  • Wrong: the Krebs cycle happens in the mitochondrial matrix, not the cytoplasm.
  • Missing: the link reaction, where pyruvate becomes acetyl-CoA and releases CO2.
  • Missing: the Krebs cycle also makes FADH2.
  • Vague: "needs oxygen" should say oxygen is the final electron acceptor at the end of the electron transport chain, which happens on the inner mitochondrial membrane.

Step 4: Blurt again on a fresh page. Now write the whole thing again, including the corrections. Your second draft will usually be better, and the things you got wrong now get a second pass.

Step 5: Turn the misses into flashcards. Each red item becomes a card: "Where does the Krebs cycle happen?" "What does the link reaction produce?" Then come back in a couple of days and blurt the same topic cold.

The whole loop should take roughly 20 to 25 minutes for one topic (our estimate). The value is in the marking. Your first draft shows where the gaps are.

Mistakes that make active recall not work

Peeking

You get stuck, glance at the notes "just to jog your memory", and carry on. You've just swapped retrieval for recognition. If you're stuck, write "?" and move on. Struggling to recall is the point. The gap is information.

Skipping the feedback

Blurting into the void without checking teaches you less, and errors can stick. Dunlosky and colleagues found practice testing with feedback consistently outperforms practice testing alone, and that its advantage over restudying is very reliable across studies. They also noted that feedback protects against repeating wrong answers, and that the effects of practice-test errors tend to be small next to the benefits.

Find your wrong answers, fix them, and test them again.

Making it too easy

If every card feels obvious, you're not practicing anything. Retrieval should feel effortful. Mix in cards you got wrong last time and questions that ask "why".

Only doing it once

A single blurt on Sunday is unlikely to last until the exam. Come back to the material over days and weeks. That's the job of spaced repetition.

Using it before you've learned anything

Active recall tests what you've already taken in. Blurt on a topic you've never read and you'll write three words and feel bad. Read or watch first, then retrieve.

How to start this week

Our suggestion: pick one class. After each lecture, do a five-minute blurt. Mark it against your notes and turn the misses into flashcards or practice questions. Add a past paper closer to the exam.

What is the difference between active recall and passive review?

Passive review means looking at material: rereading, highlighting, watching a lecture again. Active recall means you produce the answer from memory first. The difference is who does the work. In active recall, your brain does.

Is active recall the same as retrieval practice?

For most purposes, yes. Retrieval practice is the research term, and active recall is the more common student name. Flashcards, quizzes, blurting, and past papers all count.

How often should I use active recall?

Does the blurting method actually work?

Blurting is close to the free recall used in Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 study, so it rests on the same evidence. The research tests free recall and practice testing in general, not blurting by name. It works best with a feedback step, and BCU suggests using it later in your revision alongside flashcards or past papers.

Can active recall replace reading my notes?

Not on its own. You need to learn the material first, and reading or watching is how you do it. Active recall is what you do after, in place of reading the same page a third time.
